Q) Dear Christine,
My boss keeps taking credit for my ideas. What should I do?
My boss keeps taking credit for my ideas. What should I do?
A) Absolutely foremost: Talk to your boss directly. This might seem obvious, but considering a large population of people are extremely conflict avoidant, this may be the last thing one attempts to do. (Click headline for more.)
Often, conflict avoiders believe the boss should “know” how they feel because they’ve indirectly hinted at it. Hinting won’t cut it. Directness leaves little room for guessing. If this works, great! It could potentially strengthen your professional relationship. If it fails you have several options:
- Go over your boss’ head. But be careful of potential ramifications such as your boss’ hyper vigilance on your every move or appearing a whiner to management.
- Look for another job. The best time to find a job is when you have a job.
- Keep your ideas to yourself. Your boss may flounder in their absence.
- Suck it up and pray your boss quits! Awareness of options can prove liberating.
